Work out the order in which the seven families were visited. Then read the first letters of their names in that order.

First hint
Start with what is certain: Young is 7th. Evans comes after Nolan and before Young.
Second hint
Carter and Miller are three places apart, with Hughes right after Carter. Try Carter 1st.
Solution
Order: Carter, Hughes, Ingram, Miller, Nolan, Evans, Young. The first letters spell CHIMNEY. It is the only order that fits all six clues.
