Each row of the chart is one letter. A knit stitch (V) counts; a purl stitch (-) does not. Add up the needle numbers above the knit stitches.

Nothing is revealed if you are wrong.
First hint
Look at the numbers above the columns: 16, 8, 4, 2, 1. A V in a column adds that number to the row.
Second hint
Row 1 has V under 8, 4 and 1: 8+4+1 = 13 = M.
Solution
The rows add up to 13, 21, 6, 6, 12, 5, 18, which are M, U, F, F, L, E, R. The answer is MUFFLER, a winter scarf.
