The Cellar Door
Your puzzle is on page 12 of the book. Open one hint at a time: often the first one is enough.
Each shape is a piece of the grid where its letter lives. Some pieces have a dot. Decode the carving.
Check your answer
Nothing is revealed if you are wrong.
First hint
Find each carved shape in the key. The letter written in that same piece of the grid is the one you want.
Second hint
A shape with a dot comes from the grids with dots. The first shape is an X piece: S.
Solution
This is the pigpen cipher. The six carved shapes match S, L, E, I, G, H in the key. The answer is SLEIGH.
The same hints and solutions are printed in the book (pages 56, 58 and 60).
